IN CONVERSATION WITH: CHLOE NATTRASS

House of Indigo team had the pleasure of getting a small insight into the world Leeds based pop

Q: How did You get into music?

A: There is actually nobody in my family who is into music or the arts at all, so I don’t really have any kind of story like that - it all more or less started with my dance teacher, Sandra! I was always a bit of a performer and just generally loved being on stage. My dance teacher gave me the opportunity to do a musical theater solo in the annual dance show when I was around 6, and from then on I was a bit of a musical theater kid. I was pretty focused on musical theater for the first few years of my coaching, but over time I started to engage way more with singer/songwriters like Taylor Swift and my passion just shifted I guess.

Although, if I’m being totally true to myself it was definitely Hannah Montana that initially made me want to be a popstar!

"(...)the most important thing to me is just being someone that people perceive to be honest and authentic, someone who others can resonate with, both within my music and outside of that, too"

Q: Would you say the Leeds music scene has changed or impacted your music and your approach to it?

A: I have definitely met people within the Leeds music scene that have impacted my creative approach, for sure.

I went to the Conservatoire, and the talent I was surrounded by every single day was just immense.

I met Callum, my producer, here in Leeds and he has impacted my music profoundly - our collaborative relationship is better than I ever could’ve imagined one being.  Also, the small music venues Leeds has are amazing. I did my first headline with the band at Oporto so that place feels very special to me now.

Q:Your latest single “Settle” what is it about?

A: To be totally honest, Settle is a prime example of what I mean when I say I just overreact to absolutely everything. I wrote it about someone who I liked at the time, but the feelings I had were literally taking over my life, like I felt as though I couldn’t function anymore. I wrote the initial idea for Settle at like, 1 o’clock in the morning, because I couldn’t sleep due to how far under my skin this person had gotten. I was just restless all of the time, it was actually ridiculous. But I am so proud of the song!

Q: Does your music usually come from personal experiences?

A:Yeah, most of the time! Although my life is genuinely not very exciting so half of the stuff I come out with is just a manifestation of me living in my own head. Again, it comes down to that feeling super deeply - I listen to my own lyrics and laugh sometimes because I make out like I’ve gone through some kind of mega, life-changing thing when in actual fact I’ve just liked a boy.

Q:Who are the artists that inspire you the most?

A: I was raised on 1980’s pop music - my parents loved the likes of A-Ha, Simple Minds, Pet Shop Boys etc., and I think you hear some of that influence in my soundscape. My all time favorite artist, though, is Taylor Swift. There isn’t an album that she’s made that I haven’t absolutely adored, I just think she keeps getting better.

 Q:What’s next for Chloe Nattrass?

A: So much, I hope!! ‘Settle’ was actually the lead single off of my upcoming EP which has been in the works for the last year or so. The next single from that should be out in March, which I’m so, so excited about, and then the EP will follow. I don’t have any dates set in stone yet, but keep an eye out on instagram and TikTok (@itschloenattrass) over the next few weeks, for sure.
