Coal Mob are a Leeds post punk/dance punk five piece. The band has a long history of performing in the city, a history that gained them a shortlist spot for Live At Leeds so, naturally, we're intrigued.

Meeting Coal Mob was as refreshing as hearing about them. The band originates from Leeds Conservatoire, where they updated their lineup and evolved their concept

"When we changed our lineup, we wanted to keep the core of what Coal Mob is, but slightly evolve it: keep the vision alive, of being successful within the scene, while also adding these new talented people to the group and shape our sound differently"

from midwest emo to indie, Coal mob does it all while keeping their signature stamp.

This musical affinity and diverity is mostly due to the fact that each memebr of the band has significant different tastes in music; a difference that made their debut single "Bounce" what it is today.

"Bounce" is a punchy, gritty, raw and catchy piece of work, where the band's spectrum of influences shines.

Coal mob definitely have a clear vision of what they want to achieve and how; their name is well known in the post-punk scene in Leeds, but this doesn't stop them from experimenting with different sounds in their sets,

They're not as much of a message band, their USP is their untameable energy, their approach to life and their search for the evocative rather than the teacheable.

Their songs will always convey a message; they will get political without falling into the preach-y cliches of post-punk.

In "Bounce" the main theme is the experience of post-party anxiety and paranoia, getting in your head and question your own perception of reality, an interesting and refreshing flip from the oversaturated indie banger aesthetic.

Coal Mob are also an incredible performing band.

"For better or for worse, people should perceive us as how we are. Our live shows are an extention of us as a band, we're going to act exactly the same as we do during rehearsal, if you come to a show you're seeing the purest form of US"

Their interactions with the audience make their shows incredibly intimate while also giving the feel of watching one of the most famous bands on earth: they know what they're doing.

"If they pay you to come see you, you've got to give them what you can; sometimes it's a bit of a funny character that we put on and sometimes you do silly things, but it would be a disservice to the audience and the music itself not go all the way with it, to not give your 100%"

Coal Mob was an insane discovery for 2023, and 2024 will be one of their best years yet. We cannot wait for it.
